Purpose-built hydrofoils proved that “flying above water” can be quiet, efficient, and comfortable. The limitation is cost and specialization. This concept proposes bolt-on, serviceable hydrofoil modules for existing small boats: a simpler Hybrid Front-Lift Kit and a more ambitious Full Hydrofoil Kit.

Failure mode

Kit A — Hybrid Front-Lift

Kit A — Hybrid Front-Lift

The Hybrid kit targets the highest-pain part of small-boat cruising: bow slamming, spray, and uncomfortable impacts in chop. It raises only the bow while keeping propulsion conventional.

Mounts

Reinforced collars near the bow, tied into the anchor locker, hawse area, and transverse frames. Quick-release side brackets support serviceability.

Controls

Manual or electro-hydraulic control of foil depth, V-angle, attack angle, and optional rear trim plates to prevent porpoising.

Use case

Lakes, coastal hops, moderate chop up to roughly 1 m, fishing boats, patrol/rescue tenders, commuter ferries, and yacht tenders.

Indicative targets

10–20% fuel saving at cruise, 2–4 kn higher comfortable cruise in chop, and installed kit cost around $25k–$60k.

Simple clever variant: a slightly forward-tilted deck at rest can become level when the bow rises under foil lift, reducing the need for active interior trim systems.

Strut geometry
