The origin story begins with looking for pieces of image data in the digits of π. When searching for an entire image was too expensive, the question stayed open: the chunk became smaller and the generator family became larger. The sources describe this as BD reaching the MDL principle through his own question. This is the origin of its use in 8Z, not a claim that MDL as a theory began here.
